The town of Lovech (44 262 inhabitants, about 200 metres above sea level) is picturesquely located along the two banks of the Osum River, where the last elevations of the Pre-Balkan Mountain end.
It is located at the distance of about 170 km to the north-east of Sofia, 90 km and 35 km to the south, of Nikopol and Pleven, respectively, at the distance of 35 km to the north of Troyan, 86 km to the west of Veliko Turnovo and 65 km to the north-west of Gabrovo. Lovech is one of the oldest and most interesting Bulgarian towns. It is also regional administrative centre.
The climate in the region is transitional from temperate to continental, and combines rainy springs, warm summers, sunny autumns and mild snowy winters. In the higher areas it is mountainous and combined with the fertile soils (chernozem, gray forest soils) is appropriate for the development of high farming agriculture. The water of the bigger rivers - Yantra, Rositsa, Vit and Osam - is used for drinking and irrigation. In order to preserve some valuable plant and fauna species some nature reserves have been created in the Southern mountainous region.
The nature has been extremely magnanimous to the region, for it is a junction of the Balkan range and the Danube plain.
